The Creation Process of "The Vow of Compassion"

By Shirley Lan

The process of professional artistic creation is rigorous and time-consuming. However, my porcelain painting, "The Vow of Compassion," was completed smoothly with thanks to a sense of grateful dedication and a humble attitude that suppressed the arrogance of an art creator.

February 31st marked the completion of the Main Shrine's key elements. Attention to detail and disciplined endurance were the essence of the entire painting, while humility was the soul that captured Grand Master Hsing Yun's spirit.

Due to my application for an exhibition at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, I felt the guidance and assistance from the head of the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery's Kaohsiung headquarters and the director of the Taipei branch. While assisting with the creation of the Buddha's Birthday figurines for the Taipei gallery, the director was preparing the "Ode to Master" exhibition in memory of Grand Master Hsing Yun. During our meeting, he inquired, "Besides the existing selected works, is it possible to complete a porcelain creation in just over a month?" At that moment, I only wanted to do something to express my gratitude, so I vaguely remember answering with a calm expression and a declarative sentence, "I'll rush it, it should be possible."

From that moment on, my mind was constantly churning day and night. Porcelain painting rarely depicts realistic portraits due to the unpredictable nature of kiln firing, let alone a well-known figure like Grand Master Hsing Yun.

Six porcelain panels, each 30x30 cm, how should I present them in a freehand or cartoon style? I simulated dozens of compositions in my mind, but ultimately returned to the image that appeared when I said, "I'll rush it, it should be possible."

On the long table in the kiln workshop, I arranged the six porcelain panels and sketched the overall composition with a pencil within ten minutes of starting. Passersby asked in surprise, "Is that... Grand Master Hsing Yun?" "Amazing! You can tell just like that?" I was the one who was surprised at this point.

The entire process that followed can only be described as a joyful experience. I was eager to go home and paint every day.

I had visited the Main Shrine, but never seen an aerial view. Based on the printed photos and the 2.31 ratio of the six porcelain panels, I stood beside the panels, bending over, calculating and converting measurements, using a long ruler for clothing patterns to compose and color for over two hours to complete the rough draft. Strangely, the roof of the Main Shrine in the printed photo appeared too pale, so I intentionally deepened the ochre light. However, when I saw it after firing in the kiln, my first impression was that it had become too pale. Later, when I compared it with the photo at home, it was almost identical to the light in the picture.

When painting Grand Master Hsing Yun, my mind was filled with the need for precise facial details and accurate color tones and light calculations before firing... When it was almost finished, I felt a little happy. I excitedly asked my family people to take a look. Initially, they said, "Not bad," but then added, "It feels like Grand Master Hsing Yun is smiling kindly in the photo, but the face you painted looks a bit worried..."

Which artist wouldn't want to refute or dismiss such a comment? Strangely, just like the process of creating this porcelain painting, my heart was always joyful. So when I heard this comment, I was willing to calm down from the slight surge of pride and reflect. I thought about the saying, "Those in the midst of it are blind to it," and realized that I needed to endure, humbly accept, and transform this "criticism."

Later, I decided to seek the opinion of another professional. To be honest, he was a bit surprised that I would specifically ask for his advice. As expected, he praised it for a long time, then said, "Maybe it's because I can't see clearly from the photo, but I think Grand Master Hsing Yun's face looks a bit more serious." He was even more surprised when I thanked him with a big laugh and ended the call.

I laughed because the problem was identified. However, I also had insomnia that night, as the Master's face on the porcelain panels kept appearing in my mind. I kept thinking about what was wrong. Perhaps due to my constant thoughts, in the middle of the night, in a half-dream, half-awake state, I clearly saw the Master's kind and chubby face smiling at me. I couldn't help but open my eyes and immediately got up to check the face on the porcelain panels. I saw it... it was "that light..."

After gently adjusting the facial shadows and tidying up the rest, Grand Master Hsing Yun finally smiled.

Because of the tight deadline, I was anxious to send it for firing. I must also thank the director for pointing out some corrections when he saw the unfinished version, which delayed the submission by a few more days. However, on the day of submission, I heard at the kiln that two kilns had malfunctioned the previous week (the week I was rushing to submit)... To be honest, I was overwhelmed with complex emotions when I heard the news.

The kiln firing process is a test of "doing one's best and leaving the rest to fate." Usually, my anxiety level rises gradually with each passing day during the five to six-day process. But this time, another part of me kept reminding myself to "believe that heaven rewards diligence and kindness." As long as I sincerely did what I was supposed to do, I could relax and enjoy those days.

When I saw the finished product, I touched Grand Master Hsing Yun's face in the dim light of the back room. It was smooth, which reassured me. When I took it to the bright environment of the studio, I discovered that the age spots, which I hadn't intentionally painted, had appeared after firing due to the light adjustments I made to make the Master smile. Now it was my turn to smile.

This work has kiln variation flaws in the clothing area, which professional porcelain artists can see. However, these flaws turned into natural light and shadow variations on the clothing and restored the color of the Main Shrine's roof.

No matter how porcelain panels are fired, each piece will have slight size differences due to the firing. This tests the skills of the framing master. This piece was framed at an old gentleman's shop near National Taiwan Normal University. I chose a stable color and entrusted it to him. Later, it was completed on time. During our pleasant chat, the old gentleman revealed that the frame I chose was said to be out of stock by the supplier, which had troubled him for days. He asked the supplier to search the warehouse, which took a long time.

All sorts of strange things happened, but none of them bothered me. My mind was filled with one thought to welcome everything: "Gratitude."

Looking back now, I'm glad I started with a heart of gratitude and completed this work in a seemingly smooth process, but actually with a lot of unseen help and protection. Every previous work has brought me a new challenge and learning experience. However, creating "The Vow of Compassion" allowed me to truly experience that "the greatest power in the world is patience, and the strongest vow is willingness."
